Plated Skeletons
The ancient art of necromancy was not always as taboo as it is now. Civilizations long gone would use necromancy as a means of labor productions or protection. Some revered necromancy as a sacred cultural rite. Specially appointed magi would raise perished soldiers, or supply undead workers for farms and mills. With the widespread advent of new religious sects, necromancy went from common, to uncommon, to being only practiced by outlaws and outcasts.
With the slow fade of undead labor, so too did knowledge of the rituals used. Some of these techniques are lost forever, but others lie hidden in the books of long forgotten libraries and between the journal pages of deceased great wizards. One such technique detailed dipping the bones of the dead in hot metals before raising them. The metals acted as a means of strengthening the bone and providing a better vessel for the magic to seep into. This method was so successful that today, if you know where to look, you can find skeletons raised this way walking the sunken halls of dungeons hidden beneath the earth.
